EVIDENCE BEFORE PROMOTION

How Ecowiser assesses sustainability evidence

A documented methodology under governance review.

The Wiser methodology connects a specified sustainability claim to identifiable evidence, scope, dates, limitations and a review trigger. It is not statutory certification, legal advice, regulatory approval or proof that a brand is sustainable overall.

ASSESSMENT MODEL

Scope, evidence, claim test and status.

The methodology separates externally controlled evidence, primary operational records, company disclosures and contextual sources, then asks whether those sources support the exact wording and boundary proposed.

Evidence requirements.

LEVEL A

Externally controlled

Statutory records, valid accredited certifications, independent tests or audits and recognised chain-of-custody records.
LEVEL B

Controlled primary

Bills of materials, supplier and transaction records, facility records and traceability documentation.
LEVELS C–D

Disclosures and context

Company disclosures, stated-method calculations, credible research, databases and public sources. These may not support high-risk claims alone.

Ten-step review process.

  1. Define entity, product, claim, market and evidence period.
  2. Record commercial and other conflicts.
  3. Capture express and implied claims.
  4. Connect each claim to its source, date, method and limits.
  5. Review authenticity, relevance and traceability.
  6. Check completeness, consistency and contradictions.
  7. Test wording, qualification and whole-impression risk.
  8. Assign a claim-specific status.
  9. Quality-review material decisions where practical.
  10. Issue a dated record and set reassessment triggers.

Claim statuses and next action.

SUPPORTED

For the stated scope

Use only for the recorded wording, product, market, period and evidence basis.
QUALIFIED

Keep the limitation visible

The percentage, component, market, date or other condition must remain with the claim.
INSUFFICIENT

Strengthen or stop

The reviewed material does not presently provide a reasonable basis for the proposed wording.

Other statuses include Evidence received, Partially supported, Contradicted, Out of scope, Review due and Withdrawn.

Materials and packaging answer different questions.

MATERIALS

Product or range composition

Name the material, percentage or product scope and the evidence supporting origin or attributes. Packaging records do not prove the product material.
PACKAGING

Primary, secondary or transport packaging

Identify components, composition, recycled/certified content, reuse/refill design and market-specific collection or processing conditions.

Governance, validity and corrections.

  • Payment does not guarantee a supported result.
  • Communication or promotion cannot improve an evidence status.
  • Commercial, affiliate and sponsored relationships are disclosed.
  • Evidence expiry, product or supplier change, legal change or a credible complaint can trigger reassessment.
  • Appeals identify the disputed conclusion and supporting evidence; another reviewer is used where practical.

Current status: methodology v1.0 draft under governance review. No effective date has been set.

Start with one claim and its evidence.

A narrow, traceable conclusion is more useful than a broad sustainability promise.
